PREVIEW: Men's Basketball takes on Dominican (NY) with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line

BUFFALO, N.Y. —The No. 6 seeded Assumption University men's basketball is heading to the NCAA East Regional Semifinal to play No. 7 Dominican University of New York on Sunday, March 16, at 5:00 pm in the Lumsden Gymnasium on the campus of Daemen University.

THE SEASON TO THIS POINT
Record: 19-9 (14-6 NE10), 9-6 at home, 10-3 on the road, zero games played at neutral sites. 
  • Three Greyhounds players were voted for All-Northeast-10 Conference honors: Daouda Dembele was named to the Second Team and All-Defensive Team, Njavan Stewart was named to the Third Team, and Lenny Tangishaka was honored to the All-Rookie Team.
  • Assumption has the top-ranked offense (80.4 PPG) in the Northeast-10 Conference while ranking sixth in points allowed per game (73.8)
  • The Greyhounds have been known for their balance this season, ranking in the top ten nationally in bench points per game (8th—36.93). The Hounds are also ranked in the top 25 nationally in fast break points (12th — 17.82) and blocks per game (22nd—4.3)
  • Assumption has played an out-of-conference game against Dominican this season. On November 30, 2024, the Greyhounds won 98-81 on the road over the Dominican Chargers. Five Assumption players scored over 15 points: Dembele (19), Baril Mawo (18), Zee McCown (16), Jamal Barnes and Luke Michalski (15).

  • Assumption is making its 28th appearance in the National Dance. They are 37-30 after yesterday's win over Southern NH.
  • The Hounds won five straight regional titles (1971-1975).
  • The last time the Greyhounds were in the East Regional (2012-2013), No. 3 Assumption played to a 73-65 win over No. 6 SNHU. The Greyhounds were eliminated in the semifinal by No. 7 Bridgeport by a close score of 58-56.

  • The Head Coach of the Chargers, Joe Clinton, was named the Coach of the Year for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC)
  • Jaden Honis earned CACC First Team honors, and Isaiah Honis and Emmanuel Smith were recognized on the Second Team. 
  • Dominican is ranked in the top ten nationally in five team statistics: Free Throw Attempts Per Game (3rd—27.9), Free Throws Made Per Game (10th—17.8), Steals Per Game (6th—11.2), Turnovers Forced Per Game (3rd—19.96), ad Turnover Margin (9th—5.9)

POSTSEASON HISTORY
  • Dominican, ranked fifth in the last regional rankings, had to await an at-large bid to the tournament after their quest for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship fell short in the semifinals.
  • This is the Chargers' seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament. They are 2-5 in those games, with their only prior win coming on March 16, 2019, when they defeated Merrimack 64-50. 
  • The Chargers most recent NCAA East Regional appearance was in 2022-23. Bentley eliminated them in the quarterfinal, 77-67.
