THE BASICS:

The Lead: Hound forward Cam Laughlin (Natick, Mass./Portland Jr. Pirates (USPHL Premier)) scored two goals to lift fourth seed Assumption to a 4-3 upset victory over top seed Saint Anselm in the NE10 Semifinals Saturday afternoon on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  At 13:51 into the first period, Hound forward Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J./Washington Jr. Nationals (AJHL)) scored on the power play when Matt Cowles (Farmington, Conn./Avon Old Farms (Prep)) set him up at the point to beat Hawk goaltender Colin Soucy on the blocker side.  

- With 1:35 left in the first Laughlin scored an unassisted goal to take the 2-0 lead heading into the second period. 

- The Hounds got an odd man rush at 8:06, and Nick Fenuccio (Keene, N.H./Richmond Generals (MJHL)) fed Stephen Picard (Enfiel, Conn./Loomis Chaffee (Prep)) on the right side who beat Soucy over the glove for a 3-0 advantage.

- With 4:36 left in the second, Saint Anselm forward Nick Leonard scored from the slot assisted by Ryan Spillane and Vin D'Amato. The Hawks registered their second goal of the game with 21 seconds left in the second to trail just 3-2.

- At 11:33 of the third, Laughlin recorded his second unassisted goal of the game, and the eventual game winner, beating Shane Joyce on the blocker side. 

- Saint Anselm answered at 7:38 with a goal from Jon Pallotta to trail just 4-3. The Hawks pulled Shane Joyce in attempt to tie the game in the final minute but the Hounds defense remained impenetrable to secure the upset.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- The Hawks out shot the Hounds 43 to 19, while each team scored one goal on the power play.

- Goaltender Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass./Walpole Express (AJHL)) made 40 saves in the victory. Soucy made eight saves while Joyce made seven saves in his relief effort. 

- With the win, Assumption advances to its first NE10 Championship game appearance since 2010, when the Hounds fell to Saint Anselm. 

UP NEXT: 

- The Hounds will be compete for the NE10 Championship next Saturday when they travel to No. 2 seed St. Michael's, who took down Stonehill earlier today.
