Strong start by Women's Basketball is enough for a 68-56 win over Mercy

WORCESTER, Mass. —The Assumption University women's basketball team used a strong start to pick up a 68-56 non-conference home win against Mercy University, Sunday afternoon at Andrew Laska Gymnasium. 

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption started fast, as Teagan Kamm opened the game by hitting a three-pointer, before Thai Davis connected on a jumper to go up 5-0. Mercy would continue to chip away at the early deficit before taking their first lead of the game at 9-8, following a 7-0 run. The Greyhounds would close out the quarter on a 9-0 run, seeing four different players find the bottom of the net. 
 
Davis opened up the second by connecting on a pull-up jumper to extend their lead to ten (19-9). After the Mavericks scored four-straight via the free throw line, Emily Collins made back-to-back buckets, pushing the lead back to ten points (23-13). The two teams would trade baskets down the stretch, but a Madison Handrahan drilled a three-pointer with four seconds left in the half, giving Assumption a 37-24 lead at the intermission. 
 
In the second half, the two teams continued to trade baskets throughout, but Mercy was able to trim the deficit down to seven (55-48) with 7:15 remaining in the fourth, but the Assumption defense clamped down, as they held the Mavericks to 3-of-16 shooting from the floor, including 0-for-5 from downtown, and would pull away for a 68-56 win. 

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Madison Handrahan led the way for assumption with 16 points, on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from deep, while adding six rebounds. 
  • Teagan Curran and Teagan Kamm each added 12 points, while Thai Davis stuffed the statsheet with eight points, ten rebounds, four assists, and two steals. 
  • Assumption shot 41.8 percent from the field, and 42.9 percent from downtown, while holding Mercy to 29.1 percent from the floor, and 14.3 percent from beyond the line. 
  • The Greyhounds controlled the glass, outrebounding the Mavericks 42-32, while also outscoring the opposition14-6 on second chance points. 
  • Assumption leads the all-time series 7-1.
