PREVIEW: Women's Basketball set to take on Daemen in NCAA Division II East Regional Semifinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University women's basketball team is back in the Division II East Regional Semifinals, as they will take on Daemen University Saturday, March 16 at 5:00 pm at the Dana Center on the campus on Bentley University.

THE SEASON TO THIS POINT
Record: 25-5 (18-4 NE10), 13-2 at home, 11-3 on the road, 1-0 at neutral
  • Assumption returns to the NCAA East Regional for the ninth time in their program history, as they are the defending championships after defeating Dominican (71-49), Bentley (62-49), and Jefferson (62-57). 
  • The Greyhounds were well represented on the All-Conference teams, as Marina Callahan and Molly Stokes were named to the First Team, Amanda Mieczkowski was named to the Third Team and the All-Defensive Team, and Emma Dahl picked up All-Rookie Team honors.
  • Assumption has the top-ranked offense (67.3) in the Northeast-10 Conference while ranking second in points allowed per game (53.4). 
  • The Greyhounds rank in the top 25 nationally in scoring defense (5th —53.7), field goal percentage (6th —46.3), field goal defense (11th—35.2), fouls per game (11th—13.6), scoring margin (18th—13.0), assists per game (18th—16.4), assist to turnover ratio (20th —1.09), three-point defense (22nd—26.6), and three-point percentage (24th—34.4).

  • 2019-20: Defeated Pace 59-45 in the First Round before falling at Stonehill 61-52 in the Quarterfinals

  • 2021-22: Lost to Southern Connecticut State University 65-68 in the First Round
  • 2022-23: Lost to Southern New Hampshire University 67-60 in the Semifinals, defeated Jefferson University 62-57 in the East Regional Championship, lost to University of Minnesota Duluth 61-41 in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight
  • 2023-24: Defeated Pace in the NE10 Quarterfinals, 55-54, before falling to Southern Connecticut 60-47 in the conference semifinals. Defeated Franklin Pierce 58-43 in the NCAA First Round
 
No. 6 Daemen University Wildcats THE SEASON TO THIS POINT Record: 21-7 (13-3 ECC), 12-1 at home, 7-4 on the road, 2-2 at neutral sites
·       Daemen is playing in their first straight regional tournament with a 20-7 record. The Wildcats won their fifth straight ECC regular-season title with a 13-3 conference record and took home its third consecutive ECC tournament title - and fourth in five seasons
·       Since making their first ever NCAA Tournament in the 2019-2020 season that ended up being canceled, the Wildcats have advanced to the East Regional every year since, even advancing to the Elite Eight in 2021
·       Alahna Paige was named the East Coast Conference Player of the Year, averaging 21.7 points per game which is the second most in NCAA Division II women's basketball. Paige hit the 1,000 point marker this season and broke the 10 year school record for single-season triples (78)
·       Gabby McDuffie was named to the All-ECC Second Team, while Claire Pikett earned Third Team All-ECC honors
·       The Wildcats rank first in the ECC in field goal percentage (40.5%) and winning percentage (74.1%). Additionally, Alahna Paige ranks first in the country for three pointers per game (3.37)
·       Daemen ranks second in the ECC in points per game (64.7) and second in points allowed (58.3)

·       2022-23: Defeated Staten Island and Saint Thomas Aquinas to win ECC Championship, lost to Jefferson University 74-47 in East Regional Quarterfinals
·       2023-24: Defeated District of Columbia 69-66 in ECC Semifinal, defeated Mercy 55-50 to win ECC Championship. Upset No. 3 Saint Rose 52-47.
