HOW IT HAPPENED
The Yellow Jackets started on fire, going up 10-2 behind four points from Aguibou Balde and a Jalen Jordan three, forcing Assumption into an early timeout. The lead extended to 20-7, with Lovre Zaja converting his second three on the night. However, Assumption's offense would begin to convert on some good looks. Tayshawn Cunningham-Pemberton came off the bench providing significant energy and six points, as well as reliable scorer
Kani Glover, who got going driving to the basket.
Cooper Creek's three at 3:02 cut the Yellow Jackets lead down to three, with AIC leading 34-30. The Hounds turned up the intensity on the defense in the latter stages, as
Kasey Draper provided the last basket of the half as Assumption only trailed 37-34 going into halftime.
Assumption opened the second half on a six-point run, with
Kyle Hicks converting on his free throws and Glover making a layup, giving Assumption a 40-37 lead just two and a half minutes into the second half. It was neck-and-neck for a couple of possessions, with Justice Ellison getting going from his jumper, knocking down a two and a three-pointer for a small five-point lead for the visitors. Assumption was battling but struggled to hit their shots, and the Yellow Jackets offense was fluid down the stretch. Jordan's layup at 10:29 gave the Yellow Jackets a double-digit lead, forcing the Hounds timeout. Out of the break, AIC kept their foot on the gas with back-to-back threes from Kanye Wavezwa and Ellison, making it 66-52 AIC. With five minutes left, Assumption could not close the gap down the stretch, and the Yellow Jackets would win impressively on the road against the Hounds 78-65.
