TROY, N.Y. – The Assumption University women's ice hockey team could not overcome a slow start, as they fell to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 6-1 in non-conference action Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a few minutes of feeling each other out, the Engineers got on the board at the 11:44 marker of the first period, as Nina Christof directly off of the face-off win by March Wagner. RPI doubled their advantage a minute later, as a wrist shot from the point from Michelle Nutescu beat the Greyhounds' netminder. Rensselaer pushed their lead to 3-0 with under three minutes remaining in the first period, as Taylor Zahirnyi scored her first of the season.
Assumption would get on the board four minutes into the second period, as Sheridan Terrazzano recorded a power-play goal, with Kiersten Browning receiving credit on the helper. The Engineers responded five minutes later with a goal by Isabelle Hardy, which started a stretch of three-straight goals to make it 6-1 after 40 minutes.
In the third period, the Greyhounds would outshoot the Engineers 15-9, but they would not be able to cut into the deficit and would fall 6-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Carissa Mudrak and Katelyn Michals combined to log 31 saves in the crease for the Greyhounds.
- RPI outshot Assumption 37-17, winning 40 of 59 faceoffs.
- The Greyhounds went 1-for-1 on the power play, while the Engineers were scoreless on three powerplays.
- RPI now leads the all-time series 1-0-0.
