Volleyball topped at Saint Rose

ALBANY, NY – The Assumption University women's volleyball team couldn't overcome the Golden Knights as they were defeated 3-0 on the road Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference volleyball action. 

THE BASICS

Records: Greyhounds (6-11, 1-7 NE10), Golden Knights (6-16, 2-6 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The match started back and forth until the Golden Knights ripped off a four-point run to lead 10-4 off of a service ace from Jessica Vargas. Vargas stayed busy, and the lead grew as Vargas got a kill, bringing the lead to 18-11. The Greyhounds fought back, with kills from Allie Barton, Alexis Distasio, and Madison Lupino to cut the lead to three. Despite the late push to level the set, Saint Rose went on a 7-3 run to close the set. 

The second set showed each team exchanging points before a five-point run separated the home side again. When Assumption brought the score to a 10-7 deficit, Attacking and service errors began to hurt them, as Saint Rose's five of their following six points were Assumption errors. The Hounds pushed down 20-15, with four straight errors from the Golden Knights, making it a two-point set. Saint Rose closed it again, taking the second set 25-20.

The Hounds had their back against the wall and pushed hard in the third set, with Distasio getting a kill to keep the Hounds in it up 9-6. The third set was the closest one, with Saint Rose getting a slight edge at 16-14 with a service ace from Julia Cavalcanti. With Saint Rose up 24-22 with two match points, Assumption tied it up with a kill from Distasio and a service ace from Sophia Noel. Saint Rose responded by forcing an attacking error and providing a service ace, taking the final set 26-24 and claiming a 3-0 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Goodhue led the Greyhounds in kills with nine, while Sophia Kane had eight and Distasio had seven.
  • Tatiana Calderin paced the assists with 15.
  • Saint Rose now leads the all-time series 20-5.
