Women's Basketball Concludes Season With Overtime Loss To Southern Connecticut State In NE-10 Tournament

Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Amanda Mieczkowski (Hadley, Mass.) scored 17 points while playing in all 45 minutes of action, but it wasn't enough, as the Assumption University women's basketball team ended its season with a 65-58 loss to Southern Connecticut State in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds emerged on top by a 15-13 score following a back-and-forth first quarter which saw two ties and three lead changes. Senior Lauren Hammersley (Garden City, N.Y.) found junior Monica Spain (Braintree, Mass.) for a layup with 2:33 left to put the Greyhounds ahead for the remainder of the frame.

The Owls, however, tied the game on the first possession of the second quarter and embarked on a 9-0 run to take a 22-15 advantage at the midway point of the frame. But despite falling behind by nine on a good free throw by Jessica Fressle, the Greyhounds cut the deficit down to four at 27-23 heading into halftime by getting a putback layup from Hammersley as time expired.

Assumption's momentum continued into the second half, as a good jumper by Mieczkowski following a blocked shot by freshman Marina Callahan (Burlington, Mass.) gave the visitors a 31-29 lead with 7:56 on the clock. But the hosts once again had an answer and used a 12-1 run, which was highlighted by eight points from Fressle, to move ahead 41-32 with 1:21 left in the third.

Despite trailing 43-37 heading into the fourth, Assumption came back again and answered with a 13-2 run of its own over 7:23 and took a 50-47 lead on a Callahan free throw with 2:05 to play. But with a chance to take a last shot, Southern Connecticut got an equalizing basket to force overtime. A streaking Delaney Connors converted a layup with 18 seconds on the clock, and a chance for the Greyhounds to win it in regulation was unsuccessful.

Connors continued to do the damage for the Owls by scoring eight of the team's 13 points in the extra session. With her team clinging to a 58-56 lead, the senior hit another 3-pointer with 39 seconds to play which put the game on ice.

Fressle led all players with 24 and 20 rebounds. She also chipped in four assists for Southern Connecticut State (12-13), which advanced to face Southern New Hampshire in the upcoming quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Connors netted 23 by shooting 69 percent from the field while also contributing four rebounds and two assists.

Mieczkowski, who played the entire game, scored 17 points by shooting 7-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-2 from long range, and 1-on-1 at the line for Assumption. She also grabbed six rebounds. Callahan scored 14 points, and graduate student Meghan Cramb (New Boston, N.H.) and Spain netted 11 and 10, respectively. Spain, along with Hammersley, also dished out four assists.

Assumption (12-13) graduates five seniors and is slated to return most of its roster next year.
