-The Lead: The Assumption University field hockey team used a strong offensive day to defeat the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference action, on the road, on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds had five different players score in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Greyhounds got scoring started just over six minutes into play. Senior Isabel Primack (Ipswich, Mass. / Ipswich) found her classmate Deirdre Burchill (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) in the circle who tipped it in for the 1-0 lead.
-Five minutes later Primack collected the ball at the perimeter and found senior Shannon Quinlan (Buffalo, N.Y. / Williamsville North) in the circle who tipped it in from in front of Saint Michael's goalkeeper, Riley O'Connor, for the 2-0 lead.
-Assumption extended their lead to 3-0 when first year Sarah Chamberland (Longmeadow, Mass. / Longmeadow) picked up a blocked shot and dished it to her classmate, Mia Salah (Gloucester, Mass. / Gloucester) who back-handed it to the left side for the 3-0 advantage heading into the halftime break.
-Just five minutes into the third quarter Primack picked up her own rebound and netted her fourth goal of the season to give the Hounds a 4-0 lead.
-Saint Michael's got on the board in the 40th minute of play when sophomore Bridgie Loughlin collected the ball in the middle of the circle and found room behind Assumption goalkeeper, Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) to pull within three, 4-1, heading into the final quarter.
-Senior Summer Walsh (South Yarmouth, Mass. / Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) added a goal for Assumption just five minutes into the fourth period. The Hounds were awarded a penalty corner and Walsh was at the post to sneak it in for the 5-1 advantage.
-Loughlin added another goal for the Purple Knights with five minutes to go in the game. She picked up her own rebound off the pads of Gargiulo to bring the hosts within three, 5-2.
-The Greyhounds sealed the deal with back-to-back goals in the final three minutes of play. Primack scored her second goal of the game and fifth of the season off another penalty corner before Salah tipped a ball in mid air into the goal off an assist from Jenna Graf (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) for the final 7-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption outshot Saint Michael's 44-9 (31-4 shots on goal)
-The Hounds were awarded 16 penalty corners to Saint Michael's seven.
-Gargiulo made two saves in the victory and improves to 4-1 on the season.
-O'Connor made 23 saves in net for the Purple Knights and falls to 2-3.
