Lead: After one period Assumption and Southern New Hampshire were tied 1-1, but the Penmen tallied five consecutive goals in the second to eventually win 7-2 on Friday night in an NE10 Conference contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Although Southern New Hampshire outshot the Hounds 13-6 in the first period, Assumption took the 1-0 lead just 4:50 into the game when senior defenseman Brian Pickett (Wilmington, Mass. / Hebron Academy (Prep)) utilized a screen in front of Penmen goaltender Ryan Slatky to score off a shot from the point assisted by Peter McDonagh (Latrobe, Pa./Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL Elite)).
- With 5:52 left in the first period the Penmen tied the game 1-1 when Brandon Goudreau scored assisted by Steven Dumond and DJ Goldstein.
- Assumption gave up the lead as they allowed five consecutive goals in the second period from five different goal scorers. Tim Baylis and Kyle Valliere each tallied a goal and an assist while Jared Goudreau led the offense with a goal and two assists.
- With a 6-1 lead heading into the third, Assumption freshman Michael Wise (Grafton, Mass. / Walpole Express (EHL) scored his first collegiate goal at 17:29 assisted by David Belbin (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL Elite)) and Mike Sorenti (Sagamore Beach, Mass. / Archbishop Williams (MA HS)) to cut the deficit to 6-2. Seven minutes later the Penmen answered to finish with a 7-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Penmen outshot Assumption 37-32 and scored on two power play opportunities while the Hounds were held scoreless on the man advantage.
- Hound goaltender Brian Nazzaro (Braintree, Mass. / Walpole Express (EHL)) made 18 saves before David Zulauf Rochester, Mich. / Bridgton Academy (Prep)) relieved him making 12 saves while Slatky made 30 saves to earn his first win of the season.
