Box Score New Haven, Conn. (November 20) -- Led by 20 points from senior Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague), the Assumption College women's basketball team remained unbeaten with a 68-47 victory over Southern Connecticut on Tuesday night. Both teams are receiving votes in this week's ESPN/USA Today Division II National Poll.
The first half started slowly, with the two teams tied at 6-6 with 12:46 left in the opening half. A quick 11-0 run, led by seven points from Gibson, put Assumption in front by double digits at 17-6 with 9:23 on the clock. The Hounds led by at least eight points over the remainder of the half and took a 31-17 lead into the break following a Gibson jumper in the final seconds of the period. The Hounds were led by 13 points in the half by Gibson and forced 15 Owl turnovers.
The Owls made it a 12-point game in the opening minutes of the second half, but that was as close as Southern Connecticut would get over the final 20 minutes. The lead briefly fell to 14 points at 50-36 with 7:37 remaining, but a 9-3 Assumption run pushed the advantage up to 20 for the first time at 59-39 with just 4:29 left.
Gibson led the Hounds with 20 points, along with a 14-point effort from senior Katy Howard (Medway, Mass./Medway). Junior Jamie Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) led the Hounds with eight rebounds. The Hounds held the Owls to 37 percent shooting from the field and forced 28 Southern Connecticut turnovers.
The Owls were led by 14 points from Moni Smith-Ocran and 13 points from Danielle Powell.
Assumption improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast-10 with the win.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday, November 25th as the Hounds host Pace University for their home opener beginning at 1:30 p.m.
