Box Score Orangeburg, N.Y. (November 17) -- Led by four players in double figures, the Assumption College men's basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 75-59 victory over Caldwell on the opening day of the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament, hosted by Dominican College.
The Hounds fell behind 2-0 in the early going before quickly taking control at 9-4 after a three-pointer from Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington). The Hounds extended the lead to 19-11 with 10:29 left in the half and led by double digits at 25-15 moments later. Assumption eventually took a 40-27 lead into the halftime break as the Hounds outscored the Cougars by an 18-3 margin from behind the three-point arc.
The Cougars came out strong in the second half and with 14:11 remaining, the lead stood at just 50-45 after a jumper from Michael Balkovic. A quick 9-4 run though, capped by a tip in basket from senior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), pushed the margin back into double digits for good at 59-49 with 11:07 left. Assumption kept the offensive pressure up and led by as many as 20 points before coming away with the 16-point victory.
Quick led the Hounds with 20 points, along with 18 points from Donahue, 17 from senior Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) and 12 from Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Voc-Tech). Beinert finished the game 7-for-8 from the field as the Hounds shot 55.3 percent as a team, including 66.7 percent in the second half. Senior Ryan Rozsnaki (Montreal, Quebec/Landstown) nearly posted a double-double as he finished with a team-best nine assists and a team-leading eight rebounds.
Balkovic led the Cougars with 16 points and eight rebounds, along with 15 points from Arthur Morrison.
With the win, Assumption improves to 2-0 overall, while Caldwell drops to 1-3 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday afternoon as the Hounds take on Dominican for a 4 p.m. start on day two of the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament.
