Worcester, Mass. (February 23) -- Led by a
32-point, 10-rebound double-double from junior standout
Kelly Meredith (Franklin, Mass./Franklin),
Assumption rallied in the second half to defeat visiting Southern
Connecticut by a 65-61 final on Senior Night at Laska Gym. Prior to
the start of the game, the Greyhounds honored senior Molly
Griffiths (Walpole, Mass./Ursuline Academy) for her
contributions to the Assumption women's basketball program
during her four-year career.
The Owls led from the outset and by as many as six points before
the Greyhounds tied the game with 7:19 left in the first half on a
free throw from Meredith. Assumption eventually took the lead
and pushed the advantage to four before Southern Connecticut ended
the half on a 5-1 run to send the game into the break tied at
30-30.
The second half began with an 11-2 Owl run, capped by a layup
from Sylvonya Moore, that gave SCSU a 41-32 lead
with 15:53 left. Seven unanswered points though, all by Meredith,
pulled the Greyhounds to within two just two minutes later and the
hosts eventually tied the game at 48-48 on a layup from Griffiths
with 7:16 left.
Southern Connecticut again pushed the lead to four before the
Greyhounds took the lead for good on a three-point play from
sophomore Sabrina Siciliano (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield
Warde) with 3:58 remaining. Assumption led by as many as
seven points over the final minutes before coming away with the
four-point win to sweep the season series with the Owls.
In addition to Meredith's 32-point explosion, the
Greyhounds got 11 points from Siciliano and a 10-point effort from
sophomore Katy Howard (Medway,
Mass./Medway). SCSU was led by a 22-point showing
from Moore, along with 13 points Camille Fantini
and 10 points from Logan Lentz.
With the win, the Greyhounds improve to 20-6 overall, the
program's fifth all-time 20-win season. Southern Connecticut
ends the season at 11-16 overall and 7-16 in Northeast-10 action.
By virtue of its third-place finish in the regular-season
standings, Assumption earns a bye into the Northeast-10 Conference
Tournament Quarterfinals and will host an opponent to be announced
