WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University men's basketball team used a strong first half to pick up a 69-65 win over American International College, in Northeast 10 Conference action, Saturday afternoon inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 69, American International College 65.
Records: Greyhounds (13-9, 8-5 NE10) | Yellow Jackets (5-18, 4-9 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Early in the first half, the two teams were neck-and-neck, but American International held a slight three-point advantage (8-5) at the first media timeout. Assumption responded with a 20-4 run over the next ten minutes to take a 25-12 lead. The Yellow Jackets would close out the first half on a 14-11 run, cutting the halftime deficit down to ten (36-26).
AIC came out on fire to begin the second half, as they went on a 10-2 run, to trim the deficit down to just two points (38-36). The game of runs would continue, as the Hounds responded with a 14-4 run, with
Luke Michalski and
Zee McCown combined for 13 points, extending the hosts' advantage to 12 points (52-40). American International would not go away quietly, as they brought the game back to a one-possession contest (61-58), following an 18-9 run. Assumption needed to finish the game at the free throw line, as they knocked down six of seven shots to pull away for a 69-65 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton led the Greyhounds with 15 points, while Zee McCown and Luke Michalski added ten points.
- Daouda Dembele (nine points, eight rebounds) and Jacob Gibbons (eight points, ten rebounds) had near double-doubles.
- Assumption outrebounded American International 40-34.
- The Greyhounds defense tallied 12 steals and eight blocks.
- Before the game, the Assumption University Athletic Department honored eight seniors, Ugo Ogbannaze, Nick Arruda, Baril Mawo, Myles Alcindor, Kyle Gaskins, Jacob Gibbons, Luke Latina, and Daouda Dembele.
