Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 5 Field Hockey falls to No. 7 West Chester 2-1 in a battle of top-10 teams

WORCESTER, Mass.– The No. 5 nationally ranked Assumption University field hockey team fell by a score of 2-1 in their season opener to No. 7 ranked West Chester University of Pennsylvania, Friday evening at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium.

THE BASICS
Score: No. 7 West Chester University 2, No. 5 Assumption University 1
Records: Greyhounds (0-1, 0-0 NE10) | Golden Rams (1-0, 0-0 PSAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was silent. Each team looked strong on defense and midfield, as expected from these programs. Space around the scoring circle was seemingly impossible to come by. Paige Gillette made a handful of saves, but the defenders and midfielders did most of the heavy lifting to keep it 0-0 heading into halftime. Each team only registered one shot on goal in the half. Assumption's left-back, Jillian McSorley, was impossible to beat on her side of the field.

The second half could not have been more different. Golden Rams and Greyhounds were bursting up and down the field, using long, firm passes to try to generate quick chances and cause opponent mistakes. West Chester set the pace in the third quarter, and Gillette made highlight after highlight to keep the ball out.  It was the visitors who struck first, as the ball was deflected low in the scoring circle. Alexa Lehman redirected a point-blank chance by the pad of Gillette, putting West Chester ahead 1-0 in the fourth quarter with only eight minutes remaining.

On a clean play a few minutes later, Lehman wound up for a full-power shot and placed it perfectly, low-left, just out of reach of Gillette's pad. Now trailing 2-0 in the final minutes, desperation made the Greyhounds hungry for a goal, and they got one. With 2:33 remaining on the clock, Chloe Kaeller set up Julia Carbone in the center of the circle, and Carbone buried it. The effort at the end by Assumption was a great brand of fast-paced field hockey. However, it was too late, and the Golden Rams held on through the final moments to capture the win.
