SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Assumption University football team recorded their first win of the season, as the Greyhounds took down American International College 39-21 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption was the first team to get on the board, as on the second drive for the Greyhounds,
Jay Kastantin connected with
Connor Smith on a 19-yard fade route with 6:42 left in the first quarter. The Hounds doubled their lead halfway through the second quarter, as
AJ Robinson scored on an end-around run for a 15-yard touchdown run. After
Massimo Sgambati recovered an onside kick,
Dom Santiago scored a 2-yard quarterback dive to put the Hounds up 20-0. After their third forced fumble of the first half, Sgambati pushed the Assumption lead to 23-0 following a 37-yard field goal by Sgambati.
American International got on the board with 2:12 remaining in the first half, as Connor Dietz had a 28-yard touchdown run, but that was quickly responded by a 65-yard touchdown pass from Kastantin to
Connor Smith, giving Assumption a 30-7 halftime lead.
After Kastantin found
Zylas Abney for a nine-yard touchdown pass to begin the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets scored 14-straight points, cutting the margin to 36-21. Sgmabati connected on his second field goal of the game (27-yards) halfway through the fourth, extending the Assumption lead to 39-21. AIC would threaten in the final minute, but the Hounds' defense would keep them out of the endzone.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jay Kastantin led Assumption through the air, going 16-for-26 for 276 yards and three touchdowns.
- Kameron Robbins was the lead back for the Greyhounds with 23 yards, while Dom Santiago and AJ Robinson had rushing scores.
- Keith Mancini and Connor Smith each had 100+ yards receiving, while Smith ended two receptions in the end zone.
- Owen Fitzgerald was the lead tackler on the day, as he had 14, while Nick Smith added ten. Tindell Frick, Marquis Atkins, and Smith all recorded a sack, while Elijah Williams, Jordan Revels, and Brady Madigan all had pass breakups.
- Massimo Sgambati went 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, while Kastantin had the game's longest punt of 44 yards.
- The Yellow Jackets have now tied the all-time series, 16-12.
