FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Assumption University women's ice hockey team's 2024-25 season came to a close Saturday afternoon at the Martire Family Arena, as the Greyhounds fell to Sacred Heart University 6-2 in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance Quarterfinals.
THE BASICS:
Score: Sacred Heart University 6, Assumption University 2
Records: Greyhounds (10-23-3, 10-16-2 NEWHA), Pioneers (19-14-3, 16-9-3 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Sacred Heart struck first with an even-strength goal just over seven minutes into the action. An increase in physical play ramped up after the goal, first with a cross-checking penalty from the Pioneers after a battle along the boards. Then, the same goes for the Greyhounds during their own power play. Sacred Heart made the most of a shortened 5-on-4 and notched a power-play goal with 9:29 left in the first period to make it 2-0.
The Hounds returned to the power play after drawing a tripping call against the Pios. The power play went straight to work;
Jenna Chaplain and
Justina Valentini generated a chance for
Ava McGaffigan to score and make it 2-1. Sacred Heart went up 3-1 after a late first-period goal from Sami Bowlby.
In the second period, the Greyhounds came out of the gate the way they needed to.
Katelyn Prive and
Mikaela Langbacka set one up for
Sheridan Terrazzano to bury. The game stayed locked at 3-2 Sacred Heart for ten minutes, but the Pioneers' Grayson Limke scored their second power-play goal. The final period was scoreless for nearly 19 minutes when the Pios sinched the game with an empty net and tacked on a final goal with 18 seconds to play.
