MIDDLETOWN, R.I.— The Assumption University men's ice hockey team saw
Callum Welch log 60 saves and
Leo Piandes record a hat-trick, but the Greyhounds fell to Salve Regina University 4-3 in overtime, Saturday evening at Howard Arena.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Salve Regina was the first team to score, as Walter Baumann scored at 15:06 of the opening period, before Logan Calder made it 2-0 with his goal at 17:23.
Leo Piandes got Assumption on the board at 8:26 of the second period, before adding a short-handed tally at 16:42.
The Seahawks once again regained the lead as Jonathan Hamel scored 40 seconds into the third period, before Piandes struck again with his third goal of the game, coming at 8:16 of the third, sending the game to overtime.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Callum Welch recorded a career-high 60 saves for the Hounds.
- Salve Regina outshot Assumption 64-20, while also winning 38-of-71 faceoffs.
- Neither side scored on the power play, as the Greyhounds were 0-for-2 and the Seahawks were scoreless on five attempts.
- The Hounds blocked 17 shots on the evening, with Shane McElhaney and Caden Connors each having three.
- Piandes' three-goal performance is the first Assumption hat-trick since Ronny Paragallo had a trio on January 3, 2024, at Wentworth.
- Welch's 60 saves are the second most saves in a single game in men's college hockey this season, only behind William Gramme of Northern Michigan (65) at Massachusetts.
- Assumption leads the all-time series 9-8-1
