HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds started the game out the gate well, going up 4-0 with quick baskets from
Molly Stokes and
Marina Callahan. Quickly, the Owls tied it up, as Makenzie Helms made two baskets to tie the game at four a piece. The first quarter was a defensive battle as both teams tried to get her offense flowing, and it was tied 7-7 after the first. Helms had all seven for the visitors.
The offense turned up the heat in the second quarter, as teams were exchanging baskets up and down the floor. With four minutes remaining in the half, Hope Fox and
Amanda Mieczkowski were going back and forth for both sides. Fox scored 12 points in just over three minutes and gave the Owls a four-point lead at the break, 29-25.
Out of the break, Katie Williamson and Helms helped put the Owls up by nine just 1:43 into the second. Stokes had a five-point swing to make it close again, but Southern Connecticut kept scoring to keep their small lead. Mieczkowski also dropped back-to-back buckets and in a blink, the Hounds were down by two, 37-35. At the end of three, the Owls held a minor one-point lead, 37-36.
Helms began to take over the fourth, as her driving layup at 9:05 gave her 15 of her eventual 26. There were decent stretches of no scoring in the fourth, and Assumption was down by three at 3:28 after a Stokes deep ball was followed by an Owls' timeout. After the Hounds cut it to one through Stokes again, the Owls ripped off ten straight points to lead 56-45, capped off by two Williamson free throws. The Owls shot well from the line to close the game, as they upset the Greyhounds 60-47 to advance to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship.
