No. 22 Women's Lacrosse tops No. 23 Mercy in a battle of top 25 teams

WORCESTER, Mass. – Paced by five goals and one assist by Olivia Catanzarite, the No. 22 nationally ranked Assumption University women's lacrosse team defeated No. 23 Mercy University 10-9 in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption was the first team to strike, as Molly Weiand scored at the 11:24 marker of the first quarter. Mercy responded 25 seconds later to tie the game. The Greyhounds would go back-to-back, with Olivia Catanzarite and Jenna Joseph finding the back of the cage. Kelly Rosenfeld closed out the opening quarter with her goal with 2:42 remaining in the frame, sending the two teams into the second quarter with the hosts up 10-9. 
 
After a scoreless second quarter, Assumption regained a two-goal advantage early in the third, as Kyle Johnston recorded a free position tally. After a quick answer from the Mavericks, Catanzarite pushed the lead back to two (5-3) before Katelynn Johnston extended the Greyhounds' advantage to 6-3. Mercy closed out the third with two straight goals to reduce the deficit to one goal (6-5). 
 
The visitors tied the game early in the fourth, followed by four straight goals from the hosts, with Weiand and Joseph scoring once and Catanzarite potting a pair to go up 10-6. The Mavericks would not go quietly, as they scored three goals in the final two minutes, but their rally would come up short, and Assumption would come away with a 10-9 win. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Skylar Troyan recorded ten saves in the crease for the Greyhounds.
  • Olivia Catanzarite had a game-high five goals and six points, while Molly Weiand netted two goals. 
  • Assumption outshot Mercy 29-24 while having 12 forced turnovers for just six for the Mavericks. 
  • Assumption now leads the all-time series 5-4.
