No. 20/14 Women's Basketball Takes Down Daemen in Double Overtime 77-72

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—No. 20/14 nationally ranked Assumption University women's basketball improved to 2-0 with a 77-72 double overtime win against Daemen University in the final game of the Roberts Wesleyan Tip-off Tournament, Saturday afternoon. 

THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 77, Daemen University 72
Records: Greyhounds (2-0, 0-0 NE10), Wildcats, (0-2, 0-0 ECC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Greyhound turnovers and second-chance points for the Wildcats helped Daemen to a 20-18 lead after the first quarter. In the second, Assumption drastically cleaned up their play and held the Wildcats to only nine points.

Over the next two quarters, the Wildcats erased the Greyhounds six-point lead. With 14 seconds on the clock, Daemen had the ball in a 58-58 game. Danielle Dicintio made a jumper to give Daemen a two-point lead with just two seconds left. Assumption needed a hero, and Marina Callahan was just that. Molly Stokes passed Callahan the ball, and as the buzzer sounded, Callahan sank the tying layup. After regulation, it was 60-60. 

The Wildcats took the lead 67-66 in the first overtime after a three-pointer. It was up to Kaijhe Hall to drain a high-pressure free throw in the closing moments. She went 1-2 from the line, good enough to bring the game to double overtime. In a back-and-forth overtime period, the Hounds finally distanced themselves from the Wildcats when Teagan Curran and Stokes made back-to-back baskets. Up 76-72 with under 30 seconds, the Wildcats were finally forced to foul the Greyhounds. One final free throw from Callahan sealed the game 77-72.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Assumption had 25 points off turnovers compared to 17 for Daemen. 
  • The Hounds scored 34 points in the paint, the Wildcats scored 28.
  • Callahan poured in 29 points, paired with ten rebounds for the double-double.
  • The lead changed 12 times throughout the game.
