WORCESTER, Mass.—
Julia Carbone scored the game-winning goal at the 6:05 mark of the first overtime period, lifting the top-seeded Assumption University field hockey over the No. 5-seeded Bentley University 3-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals, Thursday evening at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium.
THE BASICS:
Score: No 1. Assumption University 2, No 5. Bentley University 1
Records: Greyhounds (17-3, 15-0 NE10), Falcons (11-9, 9-5 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Greyhounds and Falcons played a defensive semifinal, with not much developing in the first quarter. The scoreless tie was broken when
Elle Murray put Assumption in front with a brilliant deflection goal off a high-velocity assist from
Mia Salah from outside the scorer's circle. Bentley responded in the final minute of the half when Emma Halas scored a redirect-goal herself.
Tied 1-1 at halftime, the third quarter was equally tense. The Hounds regained the lead off a corner when
Julia Carbone was setup by Salah and
Callie Beauparlant. Assumption nearly held the 2-1 lead the rest of the way. Bentley's Gracie Moore scored a crucial goal in the 57th minute to tie the match at 2-2 with under three minutes remaining.
Heading into 7v7, sudden death overtime, one unforgettable moment separated Assumption from a chance at the NE10 Championship. That moment was seized by
Julia Carbone when she put home a lob-pass assist by Salah to spark the celebratory dogpile.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Carbone's two goals were her ninth and tenth of the season.
