DURHAM, NH - Assumption University women's ice hockey made history, securing their first-ever out-of-conference victory by defeating the University of New Hampshire 2-1 in a shootout. The game ended tied 1-1 after regulation and double overtime, officially a draw, but the Greyhounds claimed the win through a 2-1 shootout performance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
They Greyhounds battled through a scoreless first period. Goaltender
Jadyn Weiser turned aside 21 shots in the first frame, and she was nowhere near finished. Entering the second, the Hounds felt the urgency with every scoring chance. Assumption's
Lauryn Broecker tied the game in the second period at 11:05, assisted by
Teagan Vaughan and
Alexa Hanrahan.
New Hampshire's offense continued to tilt the ice and pour on shots. Weiser kept the Wildcats off the scoresheet until the third period. The tying goal was scored by Andi Calderone, who led the game with ten shots, six on goal.
The game remained deadlocked through double overtime. Scoreless through double-OT and being non-conference, this technicality officially scores the game as a tie. The Hounds and Wildcats were not satisfied and sent the game on to a shootout. Weiser made the final save, sending Assumption back to the locker room with the first non-conference win in program history.
