Records: Greyhounds (6-15-1, 6-9-1 NEWHA), Pioneers (9-15-0, 8-8-0 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Like the first games that these two teams played, neither team could find the back of the net during the first two periods. Sacred Heart outshot Assumption through 40 minutes, 29-18, but
Carissa Mudrak and the Greyhounds defense held firm.
Just under a minute into the third period,
Sheridan Terrazzano found a breaking
Jenna Chaplain in the attacking zone. Chaplain would settle the puck and fire a wrist shot past the Pioneer goaltender, putting the hosts up 1-0. Sacred Heart would not go quietly, as they fired 25 shots, but only 12 went on target. Following a Pioneer timeout with 3:18 showing on the game clock, Thomas O'Malley pulled his netminder for an extra attacker to try for the game-tying goal. From then on, the visitors fired seven shots, with three blocked by
Cassandra Johnson. Sacred Heart had a few chances as time passed, but Mudrak kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard to capture the 1-0 conference win.
