WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University field hockey team picked up their first win of the season Wednesday evening as they topped Southern New Hampshire University 3-1 at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium.
THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 3, Southern New Hampshire University 1
Records: Greyhounds (1-2, 0-0 NE10), Penmen (0-2, 0-0 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game opened up with the Hounds on the front foot, not allowing the Penmen to penetrate the defense or get close to the goal. Shots from
Callie Beauparlant and May Van Woudenberg put pressure on early, but eventually,
Marta Brzoska opened the scoring at 8:11 with an assist from
Caroline McSweeney. The second period of action was very aggressive, with lots of fouls being won by both sides.
Elle Murray had a good chance before the half came to a close, but it was blocked. At halftime, the Hounds still led 1-0.
About halfway through the third quarter,
Lily Daly got on the board and gave the Hounds some insurance with a two-goal lead. The Penmen stayed aggressive and had to pay the price multiple times, picking up some cards on separate occasions. Daly got on the board again, diving on a loose ball in front, which
Elle Murray played. Southern New Hampshire got one back with less than five minutes to play, but it wasn't enough to catch Assumption. The Greyhounds won 3-1 and got their first win on the young season.
