ALBANY, NY– The Assumption University volleyball team won both matches in their season-opening tri-match on Saturday, taking down both Lock Haven University and The College of Saint Rose in four sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Match One – Assumption 3, Lock Haven 1
Assumption was strong in the first set, going up 5-2. It continued with back-and-forth points, and the first set remained close, with Assumption holding a 12-10 lead halfway through. The Greyhounds held the lead for most of the set without letting loose and ripped off a six-point run to win 25-18 and go up 1-0 in the match.
The second set started in line with the first, with the Hounds going up 5-2, fighting off a small run, and then holding a 12-10 lead after going down 10-9 and ripping off three straight points. Assumption remained strong in the set, using some solid defensive plays and errors by Lock Haven to go up 17-12 and close out the set 25-22 with a kill by
Carly Goodhue.
Lock Haven would not go home silent, leading most of the third set. About halfway through, the Greyhounds took a four-point lead through
Alexis Distasio but lost crucial points down the stretch and the set 25-22.
The Greyhounds played exceptionally well in the fourth set, ripping off a five-point run to go up 16-8 off an attacking error and a block from
Sophia Kane. The rest of the set was back-and-forth, with Assumption closing it out 25-20.
Match 2: Assumption 3, Saint Rose 1
Saint Rose came out with much energy, controlling the first set. They stormed out to a 17-10 lead and put the pressure on the Hounds early. The Golden Knights took set 1, 25-23.
The second set started with a bit more back-and-forth play, with Assumption beginning with a 5-1 lead through a kill by
Alexis Distasio. Saint Rose climbed back and tied the set 14-14, neck and neck the rest of the way. The Hounds evened the score when
Anna Dean got a kill, and Distastio forced an attacking error, locking up set two for the Hounds.
Assumption closed out the third and fourth set with the same score, 25-21. It was two straight fourth-set wins on the day for the Greyhounds.
