Women's Soccer tops New Haven on Senior Day, 4-1

WORCESTER, Mass. –  The Assumption University women's soccer team had two players score their first collegiate goals as the Greyhounds picked up a 4-1 Northeast-10 Conference win over the University of New Haven on Senior Day, Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption controlled the game's pace from the opening whistle as they peppered the New Haven defense with a flurry of shots. The Greyhounds were rewarded with the constant pressure with a penalty kick, as Ryann Lima was taken down in the penalty area. Lima capitalized on the PK, putting the hosts up 1-0 at the 10:22 marker. The Chargers got on the board less than two minutes later, as Emma Mitchell scored off an Alida Bates cross. Assumption continued to press the opposing backline and would eventually regain the lead in the 19th minute, as Rose Connolly made a cut-back move and snuck the ball under the far post.  The Greyhounds controlled the action in the first half, as they outshot the Chargers 16-2 while having seven corners to just two for the guests.
 
Assumption extended their lead in the second half, as Katherine Laboissonniere scored on a header off an in-swinging corner kick from Ashley Wenzel. With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Maya Demello pushed the Hounds' advantage to 4-1, scoring off a failed clearance attempt by the UNH back line. The Greyhounds had a few more chances to extend the lead, but the score would remain 4-1 when the final whistle was blown.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Frida Larsson logged four saves on the day for the hosts.
  • Assumption outshot New Haven 30-9, with 14 going on goal.
  • The Greyhounds took 11 corners to just four for the Chargers.
  • In five home games, Assumption has scored 11 goals, while scoring just five goals in seven games on the road.
  • Assumption now leads the all-time series 15-6-3.
