Pernes Lifts Men's Soccer Past UMFK in Season Opener, 2-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Vegard Pernes recorded the game-winning goal in the final five minutes of regulation to lift the Assumption University men's soccer team past the University of Maine Fort Kent 2-1 in their season opener Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the early moments of the contest, both sides traded chances. It wasn't until the sixth minute when the Greyhounds found the back of the net. Gustaf Vilgot Albert crossed the ball to a trailing Ruben Faria, who then moved around the defender and fired a right-footed shot into the far post. Following the Assumption goal, Fort Kent applied the pressure, as they outshot the Blue and White 6-2 for the remainder of the opening 45 minutes.
The Bengals carried over the momentum that they generated following the Assumption score. UMFK continued to pressure the Greyhounds' back line and fired shots as they peppered the defense with 15 shots and were called for offsides twice. UMaine Fort Kent eventually broke through, as Adil Iggoute corralled a loose ball right outside the attacking box and scored the game-tying goal in the 75th minute.
Assumption ratcheted up the offensive pressure in the waning minutes of the contest. In the 86th minute, Faria fired a free kick into the box, which was first touched by Axel Gerremo before being driven in by Vegard Pernes. The Bengals tried to score the equalizer, but the Greyhounds were able to run out the clock to pick up the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Francisco Teixeira recorded five saves to pick up the win for the hosts.
  • The Bengals outshot the Greyhounds 22-8 while maintaining a slight (6-5) advantage in corner kicks.
  • Assumption won their season opener for the first time since they defeated Post, 1-0, to kick off the 2018 campaign.
  • The Greyhounds now maintain a 1-0-1 lead in the all-time series.
