Box Score PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Graduate student Alison Foley (Walpole, Mass.) scored five times and senior goalie Allie Collins (Natick, Mass.) made a career-high 16 saves, but it wasn't enough, as the No. 18 Assumption University women's lacrosse team concluded its season with a 13-12 setback against No. 13 Pace on Wednesday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.
Pace (14-4) won the opening draw and got on the scoreboard in the blink of an eye and just 31 seconds into the contest, but the visiting Greyhounds quickly answered back with back-to-back tallies. Senior Jill Good (North Andover, Mass) set up the first Greyhound marker at 13:16 and then finished a pass from Jenna Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) 37 seconds later.
Both teams continued to be extremely aggressive offensively and would combine for eight goals in the opening 11 minutes while continuing to exchange the lead. However, an unassisted tally by Good at the 2:24 mark gave the Greyhounds a 5-4 edge through the first and would also spark a streak of unanswered goals.
Sophomore Olivia Catanzarete (East Longmeadow, Mass.) converted a free position attempt with the Greyhounds playing up, and Foley netted two in a row to help give the visitors a 10-6 advantage at recess.
Pace came storming back in the second half and opened the third quarter on a 3-0 run and made it 10-9 on a second-chance marker by Nikki Mottes. Foley answered back with her fifth goal of the game at the time, but the Setters didn't go away. The hosts nearly tied it at 11s in the third when Sydney Juvelier earned a free position from a high percentage spot. Senior goalie Allie Collins (Natick, Mass.), however, came up with her 13th save to keep the Greyhounds ahead by one with 15 minutes to play.
Despite seeing its lead shrink, Assumption stayed aggressive in the fourth and threatened to make it a multiple-possession game again. Catanzarete had a point-blank look, but Ashley Belfiore made a key stop. Sophomore Isabelle Edwards (Gloucestershire, United Kingdom) then lost control of the ball during an ensuing free position, and Pace came back to tie the game for the first time since it was 4-4 back in the first quarter with 9:31 left.
After several failed chances on both sides, the Setters broke through to take their first lead since the very early stages of the game. Jolie Urraro gave the Setters the ball back by causing a turnover at midfield, and Kayla Conway finished by making her way through multiple defenders. Then following a Good shot from the doorstep that was stopped by Belfiore, the hosts used the momentum to score again with Conway as the setup player to move ahead by two with 3:45 left.
Assumption answered back when senior Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine) converted a free position, but Conway won the next draw to give the Setters possession. After some more back-and-forth action, Pace had possession down the wire with a 12-second differential between the shot clock and game clock and got the ball to Ali Quinn to put the game away with 26 left. Collins, however, made a huge save and scrambled out of traffic to give the Greyhounds one last chance to tie and force overtime.
In transition, senior Haley Rose (Wading River, N.Y.) blitzed down the field and found Joseph for another excellent look on the doorstep that was stopped from point-blank range by the Setter goalie in the waning seconds. Although the Greyhounds retained possession and Foley earned a free position with 0.4 seconds left, Belfiore came through with another stop as time expired to allow the host Setters to survive and advance.
Urraro registered four goals and an assist and Conway finished with three goals to go along with two helpers and five draw controls to lead the way for Pace. Quinn won nine draws, while Julia Burton picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Belfiore, who entered the game in the second half, picked up the win between the posts by stopping five shots.
In addition to Foley's five-goal performance, Good contributed three goals and three assists to pace Assumption offensively. Joseph tallied four assists, and junior Taylor Degeorge (Feeding Hills, Mass.) caused three turnovers. Collins made a career-best 16 saves in her final game as a collegian by stopping at least three shots in each quarter of action.
Assumption (10-8), which was nationally ranked throughout the season, graduates seven seniors and is slated to return more than 20 letterwinners next year.
