ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Assumption University men's basketball team came up short, dropping their first game of the 2022-23 campaign after falling to Dominican University of New York 80-78, Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption started strong, as they raced out to an early eight-point (13-5) advantage following a Kyle Hicks fast break layup. Dominican chipped away at the deficit and would regain a lead following a three-pointer at the 12:06 marker. The teams would trade baskets until the Greyhounds rattled off a 13-0 run, which was powered by 11 points from
Isiah Gaiter. Gaiter would close out a 13-point first half with a jumper in the final minute, giving Assumption a 40-29 lead at the half.
The Chargers would close the gap in the second half and tie the game at 55-55 with 9:43 remaining. Just under a minute later, Dominican took the lead following a Joshuel White layup (59-57). The hosts would push their lead to six points (78-72) with 30-seconds remaining, but Assumption would refuse to quit. The Greyhounds cut the deficit to two points (80-78) following a pair of free throws, but they could not send the game to overtime.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Greyhounds shot 47.3 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from long range.
- Isiah Gaiter had a game-high 21 points, hitting four-of-five from deep.
- Kyle Hicks stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, four rebounds, two blocks, and three steals.
