-The Lead: The Assumption University women's lacrosse team triumphed over the Hawks of Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action, on the road, on Thursday evening. The Hounds and Hawks were tied, 7-7, at the half and Assumption edged the hosts 6-3 in the final 30 minutes to claim the 13-10 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Saint Anselm got on the board first with a goal by senior Kelsey Czarnota just under five minutes into play.
-First year, Olivia Catanzarite (East Longmeadow, Mass. / East Longmeadow) put up back-to-back goals at the 19:45 and 19:02 mark to give Assumption a 2-1 lead.
-Three minutes later, the Hawks capitalized on an Assumption turnover with a goal by senior Annie Richards to tie the game at two.
-The hosts extended their run with two more goals, just 22 seconds apart, to take a two-goal lead at the 15:22 mark (4-2).
-The Hounds pulled within one when junior Jill Good (North Andover, Mass. / North Andover) found sophomore Isabella Jackson (Medway, Mass. / Medway) cutting through the middle for the score (4-3).
-Saint Anselm extended their lead to three with back-to-back goals by junior Jenna Balboni and sophomore Lexi Palmisano (6-3).
-Assumption finished the half on a 4-1 run. Catanzarite dished the ball to sophomore Jenna Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass. / Longmeadow) who found room behind Saint Anselm goalkeeper, Grace Young, to bring them within two (6-4). Joseph assisted on goals by Good and senior Allison Foley (Walpole, Mass. / Walpole) to tie the game at six apiece with 5:48 on the clock. Senior Olivia Angelo (Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place) gave the Hounds the lead with a free position shot goal at the 4:52 mark (7-6).
-Balboni netted the final goal of the half to tie the game, 7-7, heading into the halftime break.
-The Hounds won the first draw of the second half and got a quick shot off by Good to take an 8-7 lead.
-After a shot went high, Balboni regained possession and netted her third goal of the game to tie the game again, 8-8 with 27:53 on the clock. Assumption put in back-to-back goals, one by Foley and a man-up, free position shot goal by Good for the 10-8 edge.
-The Hounds outscored Saint Anselm 3-2 over the final 17 minutes of play, including three goals in under three minutes, from junior Lauren Jakobs (Naples, Maine / Lake Region), senior Haley Rose (Naples, Maine / Lake Region) and Catanzarite (13-9). Saint Anselm was able to sneak in one more goal with just 39 seconds to play, but Assumption held on for the final 13-10 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Catanzarite and Good led Assumption on offense, each putting up three goals and one assist in the victory. Junior Allie Collins (Natick, Mass. / Natick) made an impressive 11 saves in net for Assumption and improves to 5-2 on the season.
-Balboni led the Hawks on offense with three goals and Richards finished with one goal and three assists in the setback. Young made 12 saves in goal for Saint Anselm and falls to 6-2 on the season.
-Assumption edged the Hawks in total shots, 32-31 (25-21 shots on goal).
-The Hounds finished with 10 ground balls and Saint Anselm picked up eight.
-The Hawks won 14 draw control while Assumption won 11.
