-The Lead: The Assumption University men's ice hockey team continued their season on Wednesday night with a non conference matchup with UMass Dartmouth. The Hounds took an early lead in the first period and held on to it until UMass equalized in the second. The Hounds poured in four goals in the third including two on the powerplay to create the 5-1 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption scored on their first shot of the day a minute into the game when Robert Holyoke (Middleboro, Mass. / South Shore Kings) put a shot on net that deflected off a Corsairs defensemen and in to give the Hounds the early lead.
-UMass tied the game when Jimmy Pelton fired a wrister from the point through traffic that beat Altman.
-Assumption responded with five minutes played into the third period when senior captain John Fine-Lease (Willsboro, N.Y. / Walpole Express)created a turnover in the neutral zone and slid the puck to classmate Elliott McGuire (Reading, Mass. / Truro Bearcats) who fired a wrist shot past the UMass goalie to give the Hounds a 2-1 lead.
-The Hounds next goal came via the powerplay when Devan Sheth (Ashland, Mass. / Islanders Hockey Club) passed the puck below the goal line to Ronny Paragallo (Huntington, N.Y. / New Hampton School) and Paragallo gave it back to Sheth who crashed towards the net and Sheth chipped it past the goalie to give the Hounds an insurance goal and a 3-1 lead.
-The Hounds scored yet again on the powerplay with five minutes remaining in the game when Colin Philippon (Salem, N.H. / Vermont Lumberjacks) created a turnover in the UMass zone, circled behind the net and fired a wrister from the circle to give the Hounds a 4-1 lead.
-William Smith (Hyde Park, Mass. / Williston Northampton) scored the final Assumption goal of the evening with 20 seconds to play when Christopher Stalmok (Paxton, Mass. / Boston Jr. Bruins) worked for the puck on the boards got in loose and sent a pass to Smith in front of the net who put it past Parker Butler to create the 5-1 final for the Hounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-David Altman (Bristol, R.I. / Northern Cylcones) got the win in net for the Hounds making 29 saves on 30 shots faced.
-Assumption outshot UMass 36-30.
-Assumption won 28 faceoffs on the night while UMass won 31.
