Volleyball Falls in NE10 Match at Stonehill

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Assumption University women's volleyball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference contest at Stonehill College on Wednesday evening. The Skyhawks took the three scores of 25-19, 25-17, and 25-23.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Stonehill used an early four-point run to take an 8-4 lead over the Greyhounds in the first set. Jentry Allen had two kills in the run. Assumption pulled within two on back-to-back kills by first year, Alexis Distasio (Windermere, Fla. / Dr. Phillips) (10-8). First year Carly Goodhue (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) added back-to-back kills and her classmate Anna Dean (Monroe, Mich. / St. Mary Catholic Central) capped off a three-point run as the Greyhounds trailed by just one, 13-12. The hosts took a six-point lead late in the match on kills by Shannon Burgess and Basia Peragine, 22-16. Assumption pulled within three, but that is as close as they would come as the Skyhawks went on to claim the 25-19 final in the first set and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

-Stonehill took a 7-3 lead early in the second set, following three service aces by Molly Turner (7-3). The hosts pulled ahead by as many as five before the Greyhounds rallied back with three points of their own, including one kill by first year Ruthie Ridderhoff (Chandler, AZ / W.T. Woodson), to pull within one (10-9). A 9-2 run in favor of the Skyhawks put the hosts up by nine, 23-14. Six of those points came from attacking errors by the Greyhounds. Assumption pulled within six on three attack errors by the Skyhawks (23-17), but the hosts put up the final two points to take the 25-17 victory and 2-0 lead in the match.

-The third set was the closest, with Stonehill edging Assumption 25-23 for the final 3-0 victory. The set saw seven ties. Assumption took their largest lead of the game following a six-point run highlighted by three blocks by the Greyhounds (15-10). Stonehill finished out the third set on an 8-2 run, including three kills by Peragine for the 25-23 final and 3-0 match victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Goodhue led the Greyhounds with seven kills followed by Distasio who put up six kills. Sophomore Sophia Noel (Hampden, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) led the visitors with 17 assists and first year Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) dished out 27 assists.

-Peragine led Stonehill to victory with 16 kills and added 11 digs. Lauren Wilke led all players with 26 assists for the Skyhawks and Carly Russell added 23 digs.

-Stonehill finished the match with 44 total kills while Assumption tallied 26.
