-The Lead: The Assumption University women's tennis team fell to the Panthers of Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action, on the road, on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Assumption duo of Julia Chappell (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) and Cara McCormack (Worcester, Mass. / Doherty Memorial) took on nationally ranked Barbie Quagliardi and her partner Caterina Federici at No. 1 doubles. Chappell and McCormack battled to a tie-breaking win, 7-6 (8-6).
-Despite that victory, the Panthers had claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Amanda Franstedt and Louisa Junghanns cruised to a 6-1 victory in second doubles, while Julia Kielan and Carolina Chaves won 6-2 at third doubles.
-In singles, the bottom half of the Adelphi lineup all made quick work of its opposition, winning in straight sets.
-Franstedt won both her sets by identical 6-2 counts at No. 4 singles over Assumption junior Aimee Figgins (Milford, Mass. / Hopedale Jr./Sr. High School). Kielan was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in fifth singles over sophomore Yana Semerly (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos). Chaves came away with a 6-0, 6-1 result at the No. 6 flight with sophomore Alexis Connolly (Whitman, Mass. / Whitman-Hanson Regional).
-Quagliardi also prevailed in straight sets in her second-singles match, winning 6-3, 6-3.
-Junghanns and Federici both lost the first set of their respective matches with Chappell and Caitlin Sze (South Windsor, Conn. / South Windsor), before rallying to win the second and third.
