-The Lead: The Assumption University women's volleyball team fell to the Falcons on Bentley University in out-of-conference action on Tuesday evening. The Falcons edged the Hounds 26-24 in the first set before claiming a 25-14 victory in the second set and taking the match with a 25-22 final in the third set.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Senior Alana Hruska (Marlborough, Conn. / RHAM) put up two kills and a block to give Assumption a 9-4 lead at the start of the first set. Bentley went on a five-point run, including two kills by Shannon Ngo to tie the set at 9-9. The set saw seven more ties before the Falcons took the victory on a kill by Ellie Wheeler and a service ace by Amanda Parker for 1-0 lead in the match.
-Bentley used an eight-point rally in the second set to take a significant nine-point lead, 18-9. The Greyhounds pulled within six on kills by first years Carly Goodhue (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers) and Anna Dean (Monroe, Mich. / St. Mary Catholic Central), and an ace by junior Kyra Belden (Hollis, N.H. / Hollis-Brookline High School), but that is as close as they would come. The Falcons finished the set on a four-point run, with three kills from Ingrid Murphy for the final 25-14 victory and 2-0 lead in the match.
-After falling behind 7-3 in the third set, Assumption used five consecutive points to take an 8-7 lead. The hosts pulled ahead by six following back-to-back attacking errors by the Greyhounds, 16-10. Assumption fought back to within two before Bentley claimed the 25-22 set and 3-0 match victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Dean and Goodhue led the Hounds with six kills each. Belden put up 22 assists and two aces while first year Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) led the Greyhounds with 20 digs.
-Wheeler led Bentley with 13 kills to go along with 11 digs and one ace. Parker led all players with 35 assists and Murphy led the Falcson with 20 digs.
-The Falcons finished the match with 39 kills while Assumption put up 27.
