-The Lead: The Assumption University women's volleyball team battled in a setback to the Falcons of Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night. The Falcons took the first set, 25-23, before Assumption edged them in the second, 26-24. The visitors went on to claim the third set (25-18) and fourth set (25-13) to clinch the final 3-1 match victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first set was a back-and-forth battle, with Assumption leading for the majority of the time, but the Falcons came up strong with the final two points to clinch the 25-23 victory. The Greyhounds led by as many as four points, on a kill from first year Carly Goodhue (Danvers, Mass. / Danvers), for the 14-10 lead, but Bentley edged the hosts 12 to 11 in total kills to take the first set.
-Assumption rallied to take the second set by a score of 26-24. The set saw four ties, but the Greyhounds used a 4-0 run at the end of the set to tie the match up at one. First year Ruthie Ridderhoff (Chandler, AZ / W.T. Woodson) put up the two final kills to lift Assumption to victory.
-Bentley took a 25-18 victory in the third set. Assumption held a three-point lead to start the set, but Bentley used a four-point rally, including two aces by Ellie Wheeler to pull ahead 11-10. The Greyhounds kept the set close, but the Falcons finished it on a 5-1 run to claim the final seven-point victory. The win put the visitors up 2-1 in the match.
-Bentley claimed their largest set win of the night in the fourth set; downing the Greyhounds by a final score of 25-13. After Assumption claimed the first point, Bentley went on a five-point rally to take the early 5-1 lead. The visitors took a 10-point lead on back-to-back aces by Kiara Mayes (18-8). Bentley outscored Assumption 7-3 to finish out the set with the 25-13 victory and 3-1 match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Ridderhoff led Assumption with 12 kills on the night. First year Alexis Distasio (Windermere, Fla. / Dr. Phillips) added nine kills, one ace and 11 digs. Junior Kyra Belden (Hollis, N.H. / Hollis-Brookline High School) led the Greyhounds with 37 assists while first year Barbara Illig (Delaware, OH / Bishop Ready) tallied 19 digs. Senior Alana Hruska (Marlborough, Conn. / RHAM) came up with three solo blocks and one assist. The hosts finished the night with 43 kills.
-Ellie Wheeler led Bentley to victory with 14 kills and added two aces on the night. Amanda Parker led all players, dishing out 42 assists and putting up three blocks. Jazzy Burke finished the night with 22 digs for the Falcons. Bentley finished the night with 50 total kills.
