- The Lead: After the first three sets Assumption had a 2-1 lead, but Franklin Pierce came back to take the last two sets 25-16 and 15-9 to claim a 3-2 victory over the Hounds on Friday evening in an NE10 Conference match.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The score went back and forth throughout the first set, until Assumption took a 20-18 lead off a kill from junior
Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) and a ace from senior
Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake). To end the set 25-21 in favor of the Hounds senior
Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H./Salem) and freshman
Mary Campbell (Plainville, Mass. / Bishop Feehan) combined for a block
.- The second set was 11-10 when the Ravens scored three consecutive points to take the 13-11 lead. Franklin Pierce the went on a 10-5 to take a five point advantage. The Ravens held on to the lead for the remainder of the set to win it 25-20 and tie the match 1-1.
- The third set was evenly matched throughout as the score was at a 17-17 stand still. However, kills by freshman Ariana Orcera (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Colegio Marista) and senior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass./Ursuline Academy) broke the tie and extended the lead by two. The Hounds kept the advantage to the rest of the set to ultimately win 25-22 on a kill by Orcera and reclaim the lead 2-1.
- The Ravens held a consistent lead through the fourth set eventually winning 25-16 to tie the match 2-2 and force a fifth set. Midway through Assumption scored three straight off kills by Burke to bring the score to 16-15 but the Ravens answered with an 8-0 run to claim the victory.
- In the fifth set the Ravens took a commanding lead after going on a 4-0 run for a 10-5 advantage. Two kills by Goyette brought the Hounds back close, though the Ravens rebounded with a point every time to take the 15-9 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption recorded a hitting percentage of .140, tallied 54 kills, 78 digs and 13 blocks while Franklin Pierce hit .253 to go with 68 kills, 98 digs and nine blocks.
- Freshman Waylin Walls Parker (Beecher, Ill. / Beecher) hit .273 with four kills and two blocks, while Burke tallied nine kills and five blocks. Sophomore Brenna Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) registered 23 digs, while Goyette led the attack with 15 kills, and Romanik tallied 41 assists.
- Hannah St. Jean led the Raven attack with 17 kills and a .429 hitting percentage, while Danielle Varricchio totaled 28 digs and two blocks. Ofeira Petaia and Brittney Carias each tallied 11 kills and Hannah Runge had 54 assists.
