- The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell in straight set to Franklin Pierce University today in Northeast-10 play. Before the match, the Hounds recognized junior Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) for recording her 2,000 career assist last week against Stonehill.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first set was tightly contested through the first 11 points as Franklin Pierce led 6-5. The Ravens pulled away, going on a 13-5 run to make the score 19-10 and then 21-11, before Assumption went on a run of its own. Junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) got the rally started with a kill and Romanik followed with a kill of her own. An error on Franklin Pierce, an ace by Goyette and another error by the Ravens brought the score to 21-17 and a timeout by the visitors. The Hounds then rattled off three of the next four points to pull within two (22-20), but that's as close as they would come as the Ravens won the opening set 25-21.
- Franklin Pierce came out on fire in set two, scoring the first six points and 11 out of the first 12. Down 11-1, Assumption started to chip away as two service aces and kills by Romanik and freshman Tess Haller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine / Cape Elizabeth) brought the score to 13-7. The Hounds then pulled within three (16-13) highlighted by a Goyette kill, but the Ravens buckled down from there and won the second set 25-17.
- In set three, the two teams swapped points as the set was tied at 6-6, 8-8 and 14-14. The Hounds then went on a five point run where Burke, Romanik and freshman Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) each registered a kill. After an attack error on Franklin Pierce, the Hounds led 20-15 and were poised to force a fourth set. The Ravens then went on a six point run of their own to take a 22-21 lead, one that they would not relinquish as the visitors won the third set 26-24, and the match 3-0.
