- The Lead: The Assumption College women's soccer team scored with 22-seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but Pace tallied the game winning goal in the 108th minute to seal its spot in the NE-10 Conference Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first half was a tightly contested, physical contest with both teams pushing to secure their postseason spot in the conference tournament. A total of 15 fouls were called, with Pace accounting for eight and Assumption with seven.
- Pace opened the second half of play with a goal in the first minute, when Ashley Kenny directed a free kick into the box where Tabatha Gonzalez controlled it and slipped it past freshman goalkeeper Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) into the lower corner of the net.
- Assumption continued to push forward looking for the equalizing goal, out shooting the Setters 9-7 in the second half. The breakthrough came in the closing seconds of regulation, as sophomore Kallie Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) collected a loose ball in the box and fired it past Aisha Chauhan for her sixth goal of the season.
- The first overtime period came and went, with Assumption holding a 3-0 advantage in shots. With the Hounds pushing everyone forward in the second overtime period in need of a win, Pace counter attacked as Delany Williams found herself one-on-one with a defender outside of the box. Williams cut to the right and fired a shot across her body that landed in the side netting to give the Setters the win.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- Senior Emily Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / East Haven) started in net for the Hounds and made three saves, coming up with huge stops to keep the score goalless heading into halftime. Nason took the hard-luck loss in net for Assumption, dropping her record to 5-7-1 for the season.
- Pace outshot Assumption 19-15, while the Hounds registered eight corners to the Setters four.
