Waltham, Mass. (April 21) -- After heading into singles competition with a 2-1 advantage, the Assumption College men's tennis team fell to Bentley University by a narrow score of 5-4 in the NE-10 Quarterfinals. The match marks the end of the season for the Hounds, who finish with a 9-10 overall record, 6-4 in the NE-10.
Bentley advances to the semifinals with the win, and improves to 13-7 on the season and has finished 7-3 in the league.
The Greyhounds got off to a strong start, claiming two victories in doubles competition. Sophomore Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) and junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland / Eiran lukio) earned an 8-3 win at No. 1 while sophomores Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) and Marco Leung (Macao / The International School of Macao) also won 8-3 at No. 3.
Heading into singles competition with a 2-1 lead, the Hounds began to trail after the first three singles matches were completed. Bentley claimed the No. 3 singles match over Rahnasto, 6-0, 6-4 before sophomore Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and Knight dropped the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-0. Bentley took a 4-2 lead after the first three singles matches were completed.
The Greyhounds began a comeback, however, when sophomore Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H. / Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) claimed the No. 5 match in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Waung took the No. 1 match in three sets to tie up the score at 4-4. After dropping the first 3-6, the sophomore captain came back for 6-2, 6-3 victories in sets two and three.
In the final, tie-breaking match, Leung and Bentley's Brendan McCarthy battled. Leung fell in the first set 4-6, won the second 6-3, but lost the final in a close 7-5 set to snap his eight-win streak.
The Hounds complete the season reaching the NE-10 Tournament for the second time in the last two years.
