Waltham, Mass. (April 2) -- The Assumption College men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 final at Bentley (6-5, 2-1 NE-10) on Thursday to slip to 4-6 on the season, 1-1 in NE-10 play. Sophomore Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) led the Hounds with victories at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Waung teamed up with junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland / Eiran lukio) to defeat the Falcons' Kamil Pilch and Alex DeMuth by a score of 8-5 for the only Greyhound point in doubles play. Sophomores Marco Leung (Macao / The International School of Macao) and Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) fell at No. 2, 8-1, at the hands of Brendan McCarthy and George Samander while the sophomore pairing of Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) and Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H. / Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) was shut out, 8-0.
In singles competition, Waung swept the No. 1 match, claiming the first set by a score of 6-2 before earning a 7-5 victory in set two.
The Hounds nearly earned a win at No. 2 singles as Leung came back from a 6-1 defeat in set one to top McCarthy 6-1 in set two. The two battled out the third, but McCarthy took the win 6-4.
Knight performed well at No. 6, falling just 6-3, 6-2, while Rahnasto, Zylak and Hodor were each swept, collecting two points or less per set.
After just two league matches, the Hounds are scheduled to play seven more before April 18th. Assumption will travel to Saint Anselm on Saturday, April 4, for an 11 a.m. contest.
