Hilton Head, S.C. (March 2) -- The Assumption College women's tennis team kicked off its 2015 season with a 6-3 win against Brevard on Monday. The Hounds claimed just one doubles match but earned three singles to take the win.
Assumption improves to 9-8 on the year while the Tornadoes fall to 0-3.
Freshman duo Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) and Aida Vila (Girona, Spain / La Salle Girona) earned an 8-6 win over Lisa Pettig and Anita Maryskova at No. 2 doubles for the Hounds' first point of the day. Assumption also claimed the No. 3 doubles match on a default.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) and All-NE-10 Rookie Team selection Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) fell by a score of 8-2.
In singles competition, Burbine swept Jule Hermann in the No. 2 match 7-5, 6-4 to help add to the Hound lead while Holland took the No. 4 match 6-1, 6-1.
Junior Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) took the No. 5 singles match by a score of 9-7 while junior Marie Black (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) also earned a victory for the Hounds on a default in the No. 6 contest.
Also competing for the Hounds in singles was Vila, who dropped the No. 1 match 2-6, 3-6, as well as Riley. Riley fell in the first set 4-6 before coming back to take a 7-6 victory in set two to tie up the match. In the third set, however, Petting pulled ahead for the win on a 10-2 tiebreaker.
Assumption returns to action Tuesday, March 3, at Armstrong State at 2 p.m. The Hounds will have two more opponents in South Carolina before completing their 2014-15 season.
