THE BASICS:

-The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell in three sets to the visiting Stonehill Skyhawks on Tuesday night in front of a home crowd. Despite dropping the first set 25-17, the Hounds nearly came back in set two, falling just 25-23.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

-Senior Tara Reilly (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) led the Hounds with eight kills on the night while posting one service ace and one solo block. 

-Sophomore Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) tallied six kills and also led the Hounds with four block assists.

-Sophomore Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy) followed behind Burke with five kills and two block assists, while adding two digs.

-Sophomore Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) posted 23 assists on the night and classmate Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) notched 11 kills.

-Stat leaders for Stonehill include Delia Phillips (12 kills), Claire Manuszak (12 digs) and Taylor Stevens (37 assists).

-Overall the Hounds posted 27 kills compared to 44 for the Skyhawks. The Hounds hit .125 on the night while Stonehill struck at .263.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The Hounds took a commanding 5-1 lead in set one before allowing Stonehill to come back and take the lead 8-5. The Skyhawks' momentum took off from there as the Hounds never regained the lead for the 25-17 final.

-In set two, Assumption claimed the first point before Stonehill took three straight for a 3-1 lead. A strong block from Burke and freshman Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) made it 3-2 before Stonehill began to run away with the game. With the score 13-8, Stonehill, the Hounds went on a 6-1 run to come back and tie the set 14-14. The run included kills by Hawley and Reilly.

-The Hounds eventually got out to a 22-18 advantage on kills by Romanik and Hawley, as well as a Reilly service ace but Stonehill overtook Assumption with a six-point run to take a 24-22 lead before clinching the 25-23 victory.

-Set three remained close throughout the middle of the frame before Stonehill began to pull away en route to the 25-21 win.

UP NEXT: 

-The Hounds return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 when they host Saint Anselm at 12 p.m. Assumption has just five matches left in the regular season, including two more at home. Following the home match on Saturday, Assumption travel for three before returning home to host Merrimack on Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 14.
