-The lead: The Assumption College women's tennis team set a new program record on Wednesday notching its eighth NE-10 victory of the season after its 7-2 win over Saint Anselm at home. The Hounds are currently ranked fifth in the NE-10 standings and will face Merrimack in the conference quarterfinals on Oct. 21.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Freshman Paige Benoit Holden, Mass. / St. Peter Marian Central Catholic and senior Marie Black Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon paired up at No. 2 doubles against Saint Anselm's Tess Malerbi and Ashley Sulkin on Wednesday. The Hounds came out strong and pulled off a a speedy 8-2 victory.
-Senior Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) teamed up with junior Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy) at No. 3 doubles against Lexi Stathis and Katie Roberts, Assumption defeated the pair by a score of 8-6 to give the Hounds a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
-Benoit continued the momentum in a tight match at No. 2 singles earning a 6-4, 6-3 win over Malerbi.
-The Assumption seniors swept the remainder of the day's singles matches in straight sets. Lovejoy earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles, Black claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4, senior Cassy Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 and senior Paige Palmero (Trumbull, Conn. / Lauralton Hall) claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
-The Greyhounds broke the program's record for most conference wins in a single season, earning eight NE-10 victories in 2015. The record comes after the Hounds tied the program record at seven NE-10 wins last season. The 2014 season marked the third time in Assumption history that the Hounds claimed seven NE-10 wins.
-The four seniors went 6-0 on the day with their wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as well as three, four, five and six singles.
-Lovejoy, Benoit and Black all went 2-0 in Wednesday's match, earning wins in both singles and doubles play.
-The competition marks the last regular-season match for the Hounds. Assumption wraps up the 2015 regular season with a 6-1 record at home on the new Assumption College Tennis Courts.
-The Greyhounds honored their four seniors prior to the match. The 2015 senior class includes Marie Black, Aubrey Lovejoy, Cassy Waung and Paige Palmero .
