Worcester, Mass. (April 5) -- In a pair of Northeast-10 non-divisional games on Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting Le Moyne College at Rocheleau Field. After a 13-4 final in game one in favor of the Dolphins, Le Moyne completed the sweep with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap as the visitors scored a pair of runs in the seventh for the victory.
In game one, the Dolphins picked up a run off of Assumption starter Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) in the top of the second as Matt Buroni drove in Nate Reynolds with a two-out double to right center for the 1-0 edge. The top of the fourth is where things swung heavily in favor of the Dolphins as the visitors posted a six-run inning with seven hits in the frame. Le Moyne chased LaRosa from the game with one out in the frame as senior Patrick Coleman (Newark, Del./Salesianum St. Elizabeth) worked 3.2 innings of relief. Jeremy Mathers started the inning with an RBI single to right, while Reynolds later ended the fourth with an RBI infield single that scored Trey West for the 7-1 edge.
Assumption answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, led by a three-run blast to right center from senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) to pull the Hounds within 7-4 heading into the second half of the game. Freshman Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) got the inning started on a one-out RBI single to short that scored senior Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) for Assumption's first run. That was as close as Assumption managed to get however as two runs in the seventh and four more in the top of the ninth accounted for the 13-4 final.
Murphy and sophomore Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) each finished with three hits for the Hounds for the Hounds, along with three hits and three runs batted in by Figueroa.
LaRosa took the loss for the Hounds, going 3.1 innings while falling to 1-2 on the season. Freshman Ryan O'Kane went the distance for the Dolphins to improve to 4-2 overall as he scattered 15 hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
In the second game, Assumption took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the first inning as a Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) sacrifice fly to right scored Figueroa for the 1-0 advantage. Le Moyne regained the lead with two runs in the top of the second as Tyler Schmitt's two-RBI double to left plated Reynolds and West. The Hounds got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) had an RBI single down the left field line that scored O'Donnell from third on the play. Each team scored in the fifth, including an RBI double to left by Assumption's Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), as the teams headed into the sixth tied at 3-3.
In the top of the seventh, first baseman Pat Wright doubled to left for the go-ahead run with no outs to score sophomore Brett Charbonneau for the 4-3 lead. A sacrifice fly by West with one out was the final run of the game for either team as the Dolphins completed the comeback win to earn the sweep.
Senior Bill King (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) took the loss in one inning of relief for Assumption as he dropped to 1-1 overall with two runs allowed on one hit in one inning of work. Sophomore Ronnie Sampson (Jefferson, Mass./West Boylston) started for Assumption, going six full innings with five hits, three earned runs and five strikeouts. Freshman Damian Powers went the distance for Le Moyne as he is now 3-1 on the season after scattering seven hits over nine innings with five strikeouts.
O'Donnell and Paine each had a pair of hits in the game as the Hounds had seven overall as a team.
With the loss, Assumption drops to 7-9 overall, while Le Moyne is 8-14 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday, April 6th as the team hosts the College of Saint Rose for a non-divisional doubleheader beginning at Noon at Rocheleau Field.
