Palm Beach, Fla. (March 13) -- On Thursday morning, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a back-and-forth 9-7 final to Palm Beach Atlantic in non-regional action.

The Hounds got on the board in the top of the first as senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) led off the game with a double down the left field line. Figueroa eventually scored on a two-out RBI single thru the right side by junior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) for a 1-0 lead. The Sailfish answered in the bottom of the frame though on an RBI single thru the right side that scored second baseman Brian Walker from second. Assumption regained the lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs for the 3-1 edge. Figueroa scored an unearned run as he came home on a fielding error by Walker, along with an RBI by O'Donnell that scored junior Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic).

Palm Beach Atlantic again answered back immediately as the Sailfish put together a three-run inning that was highlighted by a two-run homer to left center by designated hitter Joel Buchko. PBA added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a five-hit inning to jump out to the five-run edge. Senior Patrick Coleman (Newark, Del./Salesianum St. Elizabeth) came into the game in relief of starter Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) with one out in the inning and struck out the final two batters to get the Hounds out of the inning trailing 8-3.

The Hounds got on the board with their fourth run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single thru the right side by freshman Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) that scored freshman Jake Byrne (Grafton, Mass./Saint John's). After the Sailfish scored in the bottom of the inning for the 9-4 advantage, Assumption cut further into the lead with a two-run eighth inning. An RBI double down the right field line by freshman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) started the inning as Sims scored his second run of the game. Byrne added a run with a single thru the right side that scored O'Donnell for a 9-6 margin heading to the ninth.

In the ninth, the Hounds scored an unearned run with two outs as Sims scored for a third time, but were unable to get any closer as the team dropped the two-run final.

Figueroa, Sims, O'Donnell and Byrne all had two hits in the game, while O'Donnell had two RBI and Sims scored three runs.

LaRosa fell to 0-1 with the loss, while Kennie Silvestri went eight innings for the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.

With the loss, Assumption falls to 3-3 overall, while the Sailfish are now 11-11-1 on the season.

Assumption is back in action on Friday, March 14th as the Hounds take on American International for a 2:30 p.m. start at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Palm Beach.
