Springfield, Mass. (December 6) -- The Assumption College men's ice hockey team claimed its third-straight victory on Saturday evening in a 4-3 win over Western New England University. Junior Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Mass. / Northfield Mount Hermon) scored twice on the day, including the game-winner with just five minutes left in regulation.
With the win, Assumption improves to 4-7 overall while the Golden Bears fall to 1-7-1 on the season.
Bete, who tallied a hat trick and the game-winner in the Hounds' 4-0 win over Saint Anselm on Wednesday, picked up where he left off, notching the first goal of the matchup just 6:41 into the first period. Bete was assisted by sophomore Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Valley) and senior Trevor Plante (Blackstone, Mass. / Mt. St. Charles) on the play.
Western New England responded just over six minutes later however, taking advantage of a power play to tie the score at 1-1.
With just 32 seconds left on the clock in the first, senior and assistant captain Joe Arcieri (Newmarket, N.H. / St. Thomas Aquinas) launched an unassisted shot on goal, finding the back of the net for the 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
In the second period, the Hounds came out firing again, putting yet another early score on the board. Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn. / Trinity-Pauling), assisted by senior Ben Kuzma (East Haven, Conn. / East Haven High School), took advantage of a power play opportunity. The sophomore slipped one past Golden Bear goalie Tim Carr to increase the Greyhound lead to two.
In the eighth minute of the second period, Western New England began a comeback attempt on another power play. Michael Darrar put one past Assumption goaltender Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn. / Glastonbury High School) to reduce the deficit to one. The play was followed by another Golden Bear power play goal just 2:24 into the third period to even the score.
With the score board tied and only five minutes left to play in regulation, it was Bete who struck again for his fifth goal in two games. Kuzma and Gomez each racked up another assist on the play that put the Greyhounds ahead for good.
The Hounds outshot the Golden Bears 35-26 overall on the day while emerging with a 40-37 edge in faceoffs. Hemhauser notched 23 saves between the posts, adding to his impressive total of 71 over his previous two shutout victories this week. Hemhauser now posts 264 saves in his 518 minutes between the pipes for a .933 save percentage this season.
Assumption capitalized on three of seven power play opportunities while Western New England was also successful on three power plays. The Hounds served a total of just 10 minutes in the penalty box for five infractions, compared to the Golden Bears' 51 minutes on 12 infractions.
