Manchester, N.H. (October 11) -- The Assumption College women's tennis team earned an 8-1 victory over the Saint Anselm Hawks on Saturday on the road. With the win, Assumption improves to 6-5 in the Northeast-10 (6-7 overall) while the Hawks fall to 4-8 on the season (4-8 NE-10).
The Hounds got off to a 3-0 start, sweeping doubles competition. In the No. 1 doubles match, sophomore Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) and freshman Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) posted an 8-2 victory over Saint Anselm's Jess Perkins and Ashley Sulkin.
Assumption notched another 8-2 doubles win at No. 3 doubles, played by junior Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) and sophomore Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy), while freshmen Aida Vila (Girona, Spain / La Salle Girona) and Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) paired up for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles competition, Holland swept the No. 4 singles match 6-0, 6-0 while two others nearly followed suit.
Burbine posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles while Riley won at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0.
In the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, junior Marie Black (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) earned an 8-3 win while Lovejoy topped the Hawks' April Regan, 8-2.
The Hounds are set to return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 14, when they host AIC at Wachusett Regional High School at 3 p.m. to make up a postponed game from earlier this season.
