Worcester, Mass. (March 30) -- The Assumption College men's tennis team defeated American International College, 8-1, on Friday afternoon to pick up its first Northeast-10 Conference win of the season. Assumption improved to 2-9 overall, and 1-7 in the league, while AIC drops to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
The Greyhounds won the singles matches No. 2-6, and swept the three doubles matches for eight points.
Pat Murray (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) blanked hisopponent 6-0, 6-0 for a strong win at number four singles. In number three doubles, Richard Jakiel (New Britain, Conn./N.W. Catholic) and Jerry Reilly (Greenville, R.I./LaSalle Academy) won 8-0. Jakiel also won his singles match, 6-2, 6-3, while Reilly won at number six singles, 6-1, 6-0.
At number two doubles, Matt Drolet (Cumberland, R.I./Mt. St. Charles) defeated Jakub Simicek 6-2, 6-4 and Nathan LaFond (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown) won his singles match 6-2, 6-0.
Lafond paired up with freshman Joseph Esposito for an 8-5 win at number one doubles, while Drolet and Murray won 8-4 in their doubles match.
The Greyhounds return to play Saturday, April 31 as the team travels to Stonehill College to take on the Skyhawks. The match will begin at 3 p.m.
