Worcester, Mass. (March 1) -- Assumption
overcame 11 missed free throws in the second half to come away with
a 59-51 win over American International on Tuesday evening in the
quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference women's
basketball tournament. The Greyhounds held the Yellow Jackets to
just two field goals over the final seven minutes to down AIC for
the third time this season.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 15-6 lead over the first
10:43 of the game before back-to-back three-pointers cut the lead
down to three just over a minute later. Assumption pushed the lead
back into double digits on a layup from Sabrina Siciliano
(Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) with 2:33 left and
eventually took a 30-20 lead into the halftime break.
American International started out strong in the second half and
cut the lead down to a pair with 11:49 left and was still within
two at 43-41 with 7:49 remaining in the game. The Yellow Jackets
managed just two field goals over the remainder of the half and
Assumption led by at least five points over the rest of the
contest. The Greyhounds knocked down seven free throws over the
last 43 seconds to come away with their sixth straight victory.
Junior Kelly Meredith (Franklin,
Mass./Franklin) led the Greyhounds with 17 points on
8-for-17 shooting from the field, along with 14 points from
sophomore Katy Howard (Medway, Mass./Medway) and
13 from Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville,
N.Y./Copiague). AIC was led by 14 points from
Michelle Lafond and 12 points from Adriana
Johnson.
With the win, the Greyhounds improve to 21-6 overall, while the
Yellow Jackets drop to 19-10 on the season. Assumptions advances to
the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament semifinals and will now
travel to No. 2 seed Franklin Pierce for a Friday night matchup
beginning at 7 p.m. in Rindge, N.H.
